Your IT career on the rise

Do you dream of a career in the IT sector? Good job (literally)! A really interesting sector, the fastest-growing industry and perhaps even the most diverse career path. But how’s your career progressing? What’s the smartest thing for you to do if you want to develop your skills, take on more responsibilities and become a true guru in your field?

What should you consider when planning your next career move? What are companies offering you? And is that what you’re looking for in a job? Important factors include the location and the commute it entails, flexibility, training opportunities, growth prospects and, of course, salary! What matters most to you?

Weigh up your options, take your time.

Your career choice can have a decisive impact on your future. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • In which domain do you want to specialise and does your potential employer have expertise in that field? Is there an expert who can show you the ropes?
  • If there are no senior staff in your area of expertise, ask about training budgets and certifications. Becoming a Gold-certified cloud specialist could be invaluable for your future career.
  • Make sure that your future employer is up to date with technology. Are they using the latest tools? Do they have modern equipment? Technology evolves rapidly and, in order to develop your skills, you need a modern, advanced environment.
  • Is your job varied and challenging enough? And is that what you’re looking for? The scope of tasks can vary significantly between a role in the IT department of an SME and, for example, a job at an MSP. Weigh up the pros and cons carefully.

An MSP meets all the criteria!

An MSP is more than just a technology company, it’s also a human organisation. The IT professional in you may well be hoping for collaboration with this kind of diverse group of people with complementary skills. Helpful first-line technicians who make new employees feel at ease. Specialised security engineers who get really excited about the latest new security techniques. And project managers with a passion for strict deadlines who communicate in human language and report with clear SLAs or KPIs. The all-rounder and ‘mission impossible’ IT professional has evolved and is now a whole team of team of experts that is always ready to help you.

Do you already have strong IT staff or a talented junior on board? These could form an excellent tandem with an MSP. For young high-potentials who want to learn from the best, a Managed Service Provider (MSP) is an ideal environment. They gain exposure to various technologies, work closely with vendors in their area of interest and can become niche experts in their preferred domain.

On-the-job training makes a difference, especially in combination with a team of experts who support juniors. Young talents can work and deliver projects of consistent quality while always relying on support.

Predefined learning paths from vendors like CompTIA are a requirement for many professionals looking to make a career switch and work in our industry. Experts, meanwhile, keep up to date on new technologies and risk through vendor-specific niche training. As an executive member of the CompTIA Benelux community, I personally consider training opportunities in our industry to be a priority.

A strong MSP also has a standard product and toolkit with software and hardware at a balanced and competitive price. These solutions have undergone years of testing in various environments and situations, and the technologies are well-known from A to Z. Since labour is the main cost for an MSP, the focus lies on automation. And you benefit from that.
